I'm currently living in an apartment, 2700 miles away from my workshop and tools. I need to make a chess board using only hand tools. I'm experienced with hand tools, but I'd love any advice or thoughts on how to tackle this project in such a limited space. I'll be heading to my storage unit next month to pick up some tools. So far, I have a #4 hand plane, a shoulder plane, a shooting board, a card scraper, a bastard file, a miter box, and a Veritas crosscut saw on my list. I know this idea sounds a bit crazy, but I'm open to suggestions, ideas, and even counterarguments!

Have you looked into local tool exchange places? Some have full woodworking setups you can use. That could be a cool way to expand your project without dragging loads of tools back to your apartment!
Why do you think your idea is crazy? I’ve been into hand tool woodworking for over ten years and honestly, your tool list covers everything you’d need for most projects. Just make sure you have a saw, a hand plane, and some way to secure your work. Don’t forget clamps for the glue-up unless you want to go for rub joints! A lot of the success will come from getting really good with that hand plane!
If you’re restricted on space, have you thought about simplifying the process? You could get a handsaw, block plane, and a combination square. Just take a board, cut it into a square, chamfer the edges, layout your squares, and then paint them! It’s not going to be the ‘traditional’ way, but with limited tools, it might just work!
How do you think they made chess boards pre-1900s, though? It's all about being resourceful!

Exactly! Mastering the hand plane will make a big difference. Plus, it's not about the space but the skills you bring!
