How to Build a Custom Shower Niche with Shelves?

I'm looking to create a custom shower niche with shelves, but I'm struggling to find good advice or ideas on how to go about it. Inserts aren't an option since I can't find the sizes I need. My niche will be placed on a half-exterior wall and half-attic space, so I'm wondering if I should just go with separate box niches like I've seen in some tutorials. I'd love any input or advice, even if you're just going to tell me this is a terrible idea!

If you're starting from scratch, I recommend framing a large box for the niche and using cultured stone for the shelves. I like to tile the inside of the box first, then use an angle grinder to fit the shelves in place, sealing it all up with silicone. Just a heads up, putting a niche on an exterior wall can be tricky, so make sure to seal it well!

Okay, I've got to ask: are you sure you want to tackle this DIY project? Cutting walls can be a gamble! If things go wrong, you might end up with a disaster instead of a stylish niche. I’d say keep it simple and maybe make standalone boxes instead. If it doesn’t work out, you won’t ruin your wall completely. Just be careful with everything!

I'd suggest building the frame out of 1x4 and using plywood for the back. Fiberglass the inside and the shelves for durability! Just remember not to screw through the fiberglass when you attach it. If it’s still open, you can screw into the sides or top/bottom. Just keep it watertight!
