How to Build a Fully Analog FM Radio from Scratch?

Asked By CraftyCactus27 On

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some guidance on building a completely analog FM radio using only individual components like resistors, capacitors, coils, and transistors. I don't want to use any breadboards or PCBs, just good old fashioned soldering and assembly with loose parts. If you have any diagrams, tutorials, videos, or personal experiences to share, I would really appreciate your help. Thanks a ton!

You might want to check out this book on radio receivers, which covers the principles of radio transmission. Plus, there's a section that jumps straight into making a simple FM receiver. It's a solid starting point! Building a full analog FM radio with loose components today can be challenging, but it was even harder 25 years ago! You’ll have to find some specific components like 10.7 MHz IF transformers and a tuning capacitor, so that might take some extra effort. Just remember, don’t get discouraged!

You'd actually find it easier today than before! Nowadays, just use ceramic filters for the 10.7MHz frequency, which are cheaper and have better performance. For connecting stages, binocular transformers or capacitive coupling works great too. And for tuning, a potentiometer combined with a varactor is super effective! Lots of options available now!
