How to Calculate the Number and Spacing of Balusters for My Banister?

I'm in the process of building a banister and I could use some help with the math for figuring out how many balusters I need and how to space them properly. The total length of the banister is 90 inches, and the brackets at either end are 7 inches long, which means the first baluster should begin around that point (it could be adjusted to start at 8 inches if that works better). Also, each baluster will measure 1.75 inches. I'm looking for guidance on calculating the number of balusters and their spacing. Any tips? Thanks!

Generally, you want to keep the spacing between balusters less than 4 inches to prevent a toddler's head from getting stuck. If that's a concern for you, that should help inform how many you'll need.

There's a handy online tool that can help you with this! You might want to check out a baluster calculator like the one from Inch Calculator—it could take a lot of the guesswork out of it.

That’s exactly what I needed! Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

The simplest way to figure this out is to draw everything to scale with the measurements you have. Visualizing it can really clarify how many balusters you’ll be able to fit and how much space you need between them.
