How to Care for Bleeding Heart Plants Through Winter?

Hey everyone! I just got my hands on three red bleeding heart plants, around 30-40cm tall. I actually expected to receive seeds to plant in the fall, but instead, they sent me these grown plants! I'm still pretty new to gardening—I've only ever cared for a cactus. My dad is a gardening pro, but he doesn't have specific advice for bleeding hearts.

I bought these as a surprise gift for a girl I've been seeing. They're really meaningful to her, and I'd love to keep them thriving!

I'm really concerned about the upcoming British winter. Are there any tips out there for keeping these delicate plants alive during the colder months? I understand they prefer damp, shaded spots with well-drained soil and some partial sunlight, but I'm worried about frost. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Bleeding hearts are fantastic! I actually saved one from B&Q for just a few pence ten years ago, and it’s still flowering every spring! The blooms fade in summer, but it keeps its leaves. By autumn, everything dies off, and I cut it back to the soil level and bring it somewhere sheltered for winter.

I'd say plant them right away! The soil isn't too cold yet, and bleeding hearts are quite hardy. They usually bounce back every year regardless of winter weather. Just remember, they die down completely but will sprout again in the spring. If you’re putting them in pots, make sure they're spacious enough and mix good compost with some grit or perlite for drainage. Water them in and let nature do its thing!

So am I expecting them to die off in the next few weeks? Just so I know.
