How to Change Oil Without Making a Mess?

I've been contemplating changing my own oil again after years of avoiding it because I always ended up with a mess. I remember thinking that a bigger oil collection pan with high sides would be helpful, but all the ones I've found seem to have low walls and just cause splashes. What are some tricks or tips to change oil cleanly and avoid the mess this time?

One simple way to stay clean is to lay down a large piece of cardboard under your car. I once used the side of a box that a big TV came in. It catches any spills and gives you a decent area to work on.

Definitely go for a large drip pan! I've been using one of those with a built-in spout for pouring the used oil back into containers. It makes cleanup so much easier, and if you're using ramps for extra room, that helps too!

Yeah, I like the idea of having extra space to maneuver, especially with a large pan. It reduces the chance of having to deal with splashes.
