How to Choose the Right Length for Kreg Pocket Screws?

I'm working on a project where I'm drilling a pocket hole through a 1-inch thick piece of wood, and then I'm attaching it to another 1-inch thick piece. My question is about the screw length: do I choose a screw rated for just 1 inch, or do I add the thickness of both pieces together and go for 2 inches? I get that wood dimensions can be nominal and don't need to complicate things, but it's been a bit confusing. I asked an employee at Home Depot, but it seemed like he wasn't sure and left quickly!

You're focusing on the thickness of the wood you're attaching to, not the one you're drilling through. So if you're using a 1-inch piece to connect two 1-inch boards, you'd just need a 1-inch screw. The depth isn't affected by the piece you drill into; just make sure your screw length gets into the thickness of the board that receives the screw.

Got it! So it sounds like for my setup, a 1-inch screw is definitely the way to go.
