How to Clean Nicotine Stains from Ceilings?

Asked By HouseHunter99 On

My husband and I just bought our first home, and we're super excited about moving in next week! However, we noticed that the ceilings have some pretty bad nicotine stains, and we're not sure how to tackle them. The finish looks glossy, so it might be PVC or something similar – definitely not a pro job. What are the best methods or products to clean these stains before we start our renovations?

You'll definitely want to use TSP (trisodium phosphate) for this. It works wonders on greasy nicotine stains. After that, you should sand the surface lightly, then apply a good primer and finish off with high-quality paint. Just remember, if the place was a smoker's home, you'll need to do this for all the ceilings and walls, not just one spot!

Good to know! Any tips on what kind of paint I should use for the best results?
