I'm trying to figure out how to connect an Onan p9500df gas generator to an EG4 1200XP inverter so that I can start and stop the generator using the inverter's dry contacts. The generator uses a momentary push button to start and stop, requiring you to hold the button for several seconds each time. The inverter will close a circuit when it needs the generator running and open it when it needs to stop. How can I set this up correctly? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to look for a momentary switch relay. This could help you set up the connection without having to hold down the button physically every time you want the generator to start or stop. It can convert the circuit signals from the inverter into the necessary momentary press for your generator.
The generator description says it has both push button and remote start features along with a pull cord backup. You might be able to wire it straightforwardly, but I'm curious if the remote start is a wireless option or just a feature that needs direct wiring.

It actually does come with a wireless remote, which might be what you're referring to. Just wiring it directly isn’t going to work since the inverter closes the circuit as long as the generator is supposed to run. This simulates holding down the start/stop button the entire time, which the manufacturer likely doesn't intend for use.
