I live in a neighborhood where my HOA only allows detached storage that's 100 ft² or smaller. There aren't any specific rules about the size of decks, so I'm thinking of building a deck that has weatherproof storage underneath for things like totes, yard equipment, and my lawnmower. My concern is how to make sure it stays dry since water can seep in through the wooden gaps. What are the best methods to weatherproof the underside of a deck?

If this is a second-story deck, make sure to manage the water flow. Using a U-channel gutter setup can be your best bet. And for the sides, keeping them open or using some weatherproofed backing on shelving would work too. You can create a storage area without making it look like a solid structure to keep the HOA off your back.
Definitely check with your HOA before diving in. They can be strict, and you don't want to find yourself in trouble later on. Just a heads-up, I suggest keeping the sides open for airflow—might save you some hassle!
Good point! I guess open sides will help prevent any issues.
This is a common issue, and there are lots of under deck drainage systems available. They usually involve a plastic layer under the joists that directs water to a gutter at one end, which works well! If your deck is elevated, you could also look into using gutters to funnel water away. And for sides, consider using lattice; it'll provide airflow and won’t count as enclosed space. Just keep the structure open enough so it doesn't trigger any HOA rules.
I appreciate the info! Didn't realize that drainage systems were a thing.

That sounds like a great plan! Thanks for the tips.
