I recently moved into a new house and completely revamped the garden with fresh grass. However, I just noticed a swarm of tiny flies hanging out by the door net I've put up, and there are tons of ants crawling on the conservatory doors. It looks like they might have a nest nearby, but I couldn't spot one. I'm looking for advice on how to get rid of both the flies and the ants, and tips on preventing them from coming back. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the ants have found a food source near your conservatory. If you're okay with using chemicals, try Nippon bait stations—the ants will carry the bait back to their nest. If you prefer a more natural approach, locate the nest and pour boiling water on it. As for the flies, with the warm weather lately, it's common to see an increase. Have you added any new soil or compost? Sometimes that can introduce tiny maggots that turn into flies when things heat up.
It might just be flying ants today, which happens sometimes in the summer. They'll settle down soon after flying. I used a fly zapper to deal with them, and then I hosed down the area outside. Since then, I haven't noticed many around!
I'll definitely consider getting a fly zapper—sounds like a quick fix!

I haven't added new soil in the garden, but I did use some compost and manure at the front. The back garden hasn’t seen anything in over a month.
