How to DIY an Ikea Kallax-style Bookcase Using Oak?

Asked By CraftyNinja87 On

I'm a bit of a novice woodworker and I'm looking to create my own version of the Ikea Kallax bookshelf out of real oak. I'm considering using solid wood, but it seems quite costly, especially for the thick outer frame that measures 1.5". I've thought about using 3/4" oak plywood and doubling it up for that outer frame, then adding strips of solid oak to create a face frame to cover the plywood edges. Is this a good approach or does anyone have better suggestions?

Using 3/4" oak plywood and adding a separate 1.5" solid wood face frame afterwards is a smart move. This way, you're saving on costs but still achieving a clean look.

That makes sense for the wall side, but for the side that will be exposed, you probably want that face frame thickness to match the bookshelf's profile, right?
