How to Drill a 3-Inch Hole for PVC Pipes in a Bookcase?

Hey everyone! I'm working on a fun DIY project where I'm turning a bookcase into a Mario-level theme. I want to use 3-inch PVC pipes as warp pipes for my kids' toys to slide down from one shelf to another. I have a drill (pretty sure it's a Hilti), but I'm not sure what tools or attachments I need to drill a hole in the shelf for the pipe. Any recommendations on what to get from Lowes? Also, the bookcase isn't the sturdiest out there, so I want to make sure I do it right!

A forstner bit can also work well for this project since it's less aggressive and might be easier to manage on a lighter shelf. Plus, if you're worried about damaging the shelf, it could be a safer choice. Best of luck with your Mario bookcase!

Definitely go for a 3.5-inch hole saw, especially if you're using schedule 40 PVC pipe. Measure the outer diameter of your pipe first, just to be sure. If you plan for the pipe to fit through the shelf without sitting flush, that’ll be key. If you want it installed nice and secure, glue it in after drilling the hole!

Thanks for the tip! I want it to drop toys from one level to the next, so I’ll need it to go straight through the shelf. I’ll be sure to check the pipe dimensions.

You'll want a 3-inch hole saw attachment for your drill. Lowe's, Home Depot, or even Harbor Freight should have them in stock. Just make sure to check if the PVC pipe fits snugly within the hole, or if you want it to sit flush with the shelf – that could change your hole size a bit!
