How to Effectively Deal with Mares Tail in My Garden?

Asked By SunnyGarden12 On

Hey everyone, I just discovered three sprigs of mares tail in my garden—one near the edge and two by my shed. I immediately pulled them up and sprayed the area with soapy vinegar (I know this isn't super strong, but it was all I had since I avoid using herbicides). I'm anxious about it spreading, so I'm looking for the best ways to manage this before it overtakes my garden! Any tips?

The best move is to keep pulling those sprigs up whenever you see them and try to get a good grip on the roots. This plant has been around forever, so it can be tough to get rid of completely! Also, don't compost them; just toss them in the trash to prevent re-growing. If you keep at it, you can weaken it over time!

Don't worry too much! Mares tail definitely seems scary, but it’s manageable—especially since you just spotted a few. Keep an eye on them and pull them up as you see them. You're doing the right thing! It’s a native plant, not really invasive, so just take it bit by bit without freaking out.

Stick to pulling them up and binning them! We had a huge issue with mares tail, but this year it's way better because I’ve been diligent about removing it whenever it pops up. You can't entirely get rid of it, but by reducing its growth, you’ll be in a better place. Plus, it doesn’t really harm other plants unless it gets out of control.
