How to Ensure My Landscaper is Legit: Am I Overthinking?

I'm currently assessing a few landscaping companies for some work, and one of them has a Facebook page showcasing their projects, which look decent. However, I can't find much else about them—no website or any information on whether they're licensed. When I asked the owner, he mentioned that they're an LLC with insurance and will be applying for the necessary city certifications to be licensed for sidewalk and driveway projects. For those of you who've dealt with landscapers before, is it true that they only need insurance and not a license? Am I being too careful here?

Keep in mind that "landscape companies" can mean so many different things. It could help tighten down your focus on what kind of services you actually need from them.

It really hinges on local laws. In my area, tree services must have licenses, but not all landscaping companies do. It's a good move to call your local Board of Public Works for clarification on what's required. Another tip is to check their ratings on the Better Business Bureau, if available. Also, if they claim to have insurance, ask for a certificate and confirm with the insurance company to ensure it's active. We've seen companies flaunt expired coverages in the past, so it's wise to double-check.

Thanks for the advice! I checked BBB and didn't find them; looks like I need to investigate further.

Check your state's business registry online to see if they're officially licensed. A lack of a license could mean they might not adhere to regulations, which is risky.

I looked them up and they don't appear to be licensed. They say they only need one if they work on sidewalks.
