How to Find the Right Parts When You Don’t Know the Proper Terms?

I'm trying to figure out how to find specific parts and attachments for a project I'm working on. Right now, I'm looking for a way to connect a clear hose to a 55-gallon drum, but I don't even know the right terms to search for this kind of hose attachment. How can I effectively find what I need without the correct terminology? Any tips would be appreciated!

Honestly, using AI for this kind of search can be a game-changer. When you describe what you need, AI can help you explore various keywords that relate to your project, even if your descriptions are vague. For instance, saying "I need a metal piece that looks like a hex nut but has a plastic ring" can lead to some solid suggestions.

That’s a great point! I hadn’t thought of using AI for this. I usually stick to Google and it can be hit or miss.

One of the best ways to identify parts is to take a photo of what you have and do a reverse image search on Google. If you don’t have the actual part, you can try describing it as best as you can. You can even input vague descriptions into Google Images who often leads to similar items, or ask a friend who might know about machinery. Really helps narrow it down!

That’s actually super helpful! I’ll give that a try next time. I used to ask my machinist friend too, but he's hard to pin down.

I like the idea! But what if you don’t even have a picture of it? That’s my main issue.

If you're coming off the side or bottom of the barrel, look for a bulkhead fitting, and if it’s from the lid, you might want a bung fitting. Those are pretty common terms that could get you the right connection. Otherwise, your local hardware store can be invaluable—sometimes just wandering the aisles can lead to finding what you need!

Thanks! That helps a lot. I think I was overcomplicating it trying to remember the specific terms.

Visiting the hardware store is always good for making discoveries!
