How to Fix a Large Bump in My Basement Floor?

I'm in a bit of a bind here. My city inspector is making me address a large bump in my basement floor before I can sell my house. It's about 3 feet wide and 1 foot high, and I learned that it's actually a big boulder that they couldn't remove when my house was built over a century ago. Apparently, it has shifted a bit since then, and now it sounds hollow. I'm also concerned about a drain line nearby. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? What tips do you have for removing the concrete and prepping the area for repouring? It seems like it could be straightforward, but I'd love to hear any advice you have! I have some experience, but it never hurts to ask.

Instead of removing the bump, have you thought about making good use of it? You could build some shelving around it! Those freestanding commercial units from places like Costco can fit right over, and you'll get more storage space while eliminating the tripping hazard. Win-win!

This sounds frustrating! Why is the city involved? Did someone complain? It's weird how they can regulate your private property. Just an idea, but before trying to chisel out the concrete, why not make a lightweight wooden platform over the bump? You could turn it into a workbench, and it's easy to move for future owners. Seems silly for an inspector to nitpick about this!

I agree, don’t rush to remove it! There are creative ways to cover it up. Maybe even turn it into a feature or a secret storage spot. Just gotta think outside the box!
