How to Fix the Tub-Tile Joint: Grout vs. Caulk?

Asked By CuriousCat94 On

I recently moved into a house and noticed that the previous owners grouted the joint between the tub and the tile. Now it's cracking, and I'm thinking they should have used silicone caulk instead. Should I remove the old grout before applying the caulk, or can I just apply the caulk over the grout?

You definitely want to scrape out the old grout first. Caulk doesn’t adhere well to grout, and that’ll just lead to it cracking again. Make sure the gap is clean and dry before you apply the silicone caulk; that’ll give you a smooth finish.

For the best result, it’s really important to remove the grout. If you want a cleaner look, consider using a siliconized grout caulk; it looks just like grout but has a bit of flexibility, so it won’t crack as easily as regular grout will.

Exactly! Plus, that siliconized grout caulk will blend in nicely and give you a more polished finish.
