How to Get Rid of a Persistent Urine Smell in My Toilet?

Asked By HomeFixer123 On

I recently bought a house that was fairly neglected, and I've been dealing with a strange problem in my master bathroom. Since moving in, my toilet has had a strong smell of old urine, even though I've cleaned it thoroughly. I've checked the toilet and it's not loose, but I am wondering if replacing the wax ring could help. Are there any other tips or solutions you all could recommend?

Replacing the wax ring is a solid first step. I've had a similar issue before, and it helped me a ton! Also, I suggest using some shaving cream or bleach around the base—where those little messes accumulate can really cause odors to linger. When I bought my place, I took out the toilets, bleached everything, new rings, and caulked. Had no more issues after that!

Totally agree! Cleaning everything underneath is crucial. Also, check under the flange—you might find some old damage to the wood that needs fixing before it gets worse.

Haha, "caked in old piss" really made me chuckle! But seriously, have you checked the toilet tank? Sometimes if it's not the bowl, it could be coming from the reservoir if the previous owners didn't use the toilet properly.

Definitely consider removing the toilet to swap the wax ring. While you're at it, inspect the floor around the flange—make sure everything is dry and intact. Any wetness there could be a big part of the problem!
