I've recently encountered a problem with drain flies in my lucky bamboo plant's pot. It started with just one fly about a week ago, but now there are more, and my bamboo doesn't seem to be happy about it. My bamboo is grown in just water with washed rocks to support the roots since it prefers distilled water—any other type of water makes it wilt. I'm trying to find a solution apart from draining the plant and allowing it to dry out. Is there a special mixture I can add to the water to eliminate these flies and their larvae? I've been caring for this bamboo for nearly five years, and I want to save it from these pests that likely came in during a recent heatwave.

Make sure to double-check the directions on any product you use, even the organic ones. There are many pyrethrin-based solutions out there, and they can be effective. Just be careful with the dosage!
I suggest using a pyrethrin drench. It's organic and should help take care of the larvae. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully, as even organic solutions can be potent if not used properly. Pyrethrin is also commonly used in mosquito control for standing water, so it should work well in your setup. Just be cautious with the quantity to avoid harming your bamboo!
I've had similar issues with my plants that only take distilled water. It's tough! Just make sure whatever product you choose is safe for water-grown plants. Good luck, and I hope your bamboo bounces back!
