How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats in House Plants?

Asked By GreenThumb42 On

I really need help with my house plants. I keep dealing with fungus gnats no matter what I do! I've taken the plants outside, rinsed their roots, and repotted them with fresh soil. I've even tried bug sprays, though I'm not a fan of using chemicals. I rarely water them, and I've added sand on top of the pots to deter them. Yet, the gnats keep coming back. I've searched online, but I mostly see product suggestions from the US. I'm located in the UK—what solutions have you all tried?

I used mosquito bits on top of the soil, plus I bought a moisture meter to avoid overwatering. That combo cleared them up for me!

What exactly are mosquito bits? I’ve never heard of them before.

I found that bottom watering really helps! I place my pots in a sink or tray of water to let them soak up from the bottom. This keeps the topsoil dry, which makes it harder for the gnats to breed.

I always do that too! Guess I forgot to mention it as well; it really does work!

What worked wonders for me was cutting back on how much I watered and always watering from the bottom. I also prevent gnats from entering through drainage holes by putting my pots inside a larger pot—make sure they fit tightly so no gnat can sneak in!

I've been doing all those things too! Seriously, these gnats are driving me crazy!
