I live in a 1970s home in the northeast and I've noticed that when it's warm and windy outside, a musty smell takes over my house. This smell is most prominent on the second floor, which is directly beneath the attic. The attic access is through a ceiling hatch in one of the bedroom closets, and I've covered it with a wooden panel. I'm guessing that attic air is leaking into my living space, but I'm unsure how to prevent this. Is this something I should be worried about health-wise, or is it just a nuisance? It feels like I'm sitting right in the attic!

Have you checked your attic ventilation? It's important to have both intake and exhaust vents to keep air circulated. A couple of gable vents on each side is a good start, but make sure they're doing their job!
Installing a whirlybird (attic ventilator) could really help. Also consider sealing any gaps where air might seep in, like around your wiring. And, while you're at it, check your insulation, because old insulation can trap those musty odors too!

Yeah, ventilation is key! If you suspect it's not enough, you might need to install additional vents or a fan to help with airflow.
