I've discovered a black locust sprouting in my raised garden bed. Since it's considered invasive in Michigan, I'm concerned about whether using triclopyr—after cutting the bark—would harm the soil and affect my ability to grow food. Should I apply the herbicide in July and avoid using that bed for the rest of the season? Also, I'm about to begin planting my seedlings and I'm undecided if I should exclude that bed this year to eliminate the invasive plant. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

I’ve dealt with similar issues before! Instead of chemicals, you might consider a physical approach. I usually cut the saplings down at ground level and insert a copper stake into the stump. My grandfather taught me this trick—it totally works without the toxins! Plus, copper nails are easy to find; I got mine on Amazon. It’s a safer option compared to herbicides.
