I've been growing a vegetable garden on my balcony and usually, I love having birds around, especially since I plant flowers to attract beautiful hummingbirds. However, this year seems different as I've noticed a nest of little green birds, possibly warblers, nearby. They've been visiting my garden and, well, pooping on my veggies. While they're not damaging the plants, I'm concerned about the poop being a potential vector for bird flu. I've been cutting off and discarding any leaves affected by their droppings, but I'm not sure how to properly disinfect my pots. I'm worried that using bleach might harm my veggies. Am I just being paranoid here? I want to be safe without losing my garden or money during these tough economic times!

I know it sounds stressful worrying about bird flu, especially with all the hygiene talk lately. But it’s really natural for birds to poop on plants, and we just need to wash our veggies well. I’ve got little birds in my garden too and I just make sure not to snack directly from the plants this year, giving them a good wash first!
Haha, I thought you were going to complain about pigeons with their huge mess! I’m pretty aggressive about clearing that stuff off my plants. But little songbirds? I leave them alone; I enjoy seeing them around, especially since they help with pollination. I don’t worry too much about bird flu from them, but I always wash my harvest before eating!
I initially worried about bird droppings too, especially with gardening on my balcony. I agree with others that washing is key. I’ve seen those cute little birds around my plants, and while I can’t control it, I still enjoy their presence. Just make sure everything is clean before you nibble on anything!
Honestly, I totally get where you’re coming from about the bird poop. But just think about it for a second—there's a lot of animal droppings that can end up on food, even from produce at farmers' markets. The key is washing everything really well before you eat it, and cooking your veggies will take care of most issues. Just keep cleaning them like you usually would!

Exactly! I’ve been washing mine thoroughly too, just to be safe.
