Hey everyone! I'm in the process of prepping my exterior window trim for paint and I've hit a snag. The caulk around my windows has developed a black mildew appearance, and I want to address this issue before I take the plunge and start painting. Would it be possible to clean it with a bleach solution and some light scrubbing, or would it be better to completely remove and re-caulk? I'm wondering if stripping out the old caulk and replacing it might actually be easier in the long run. Any tips and tricks would be super helpful!

It looks like you’re dealing with silicone caulk, which can be tricky because it won’t hold paint well. I recommend cutting it all out completely. Once you’ve removed the old caulk, go for a urethane caulk for the reapplication – it’ll give you a better finish for painting.
Thanks for the tip! When you say urethane, do you mean something like an exterior-grade silicone caulk? I'm also thinking of just replacing all the caulk around my windows since they’re all similar in age. Do you think that's overkill or a smart move?
