How to Handle Pricing Questions Over the Phone for My Gardening Business?

Asked By GuitarNinja42 On

I'm starting a gardening business and I often struggle with phone calls, especially when it comes to discussing prices. I tend to freeze up when potential clients ask how much I charge for half or full day jobs. I've managed a bit with scripting, but I'm still hesitant. Should I provide quotes over the phone, or is it better to wait until I can see the job in person? So far, I haven't had to give a price on a call, but I'm unsure about the best approach.

I'd suggest having an hourly rate laid out that you can share upfront. Just tell clients that it’s a base rate and that final quotes will depend on seeing the job. For instance, say something like, "My half-day rate is £XXX, but I’ll have to assess the site to give a proper estimate." This way, you're being honest while still giving them something to consider.

Good idea! That way they know what to expect as a starting point.

It's key to establish trust. When clients ask for exact figures on the spot, just say it’s really variable depending on several factors. Offer them the hourly rate and stress that other costs might come into play depending on the work needed once you see it. They’ll understand you’re serious about providing a fair estimate instead of rushing to quote.

So true! Clients respect you more when you take your time to assess properly.

Yeah, it’s better than getting stuck with unexpected issues after giving a flat rate!

Most experienced pros recommend not giving prices over the phone. It's better to ask clients for pictures of the job and arrange a visit to see it in person. This way, you can assess the work and then provide a quote via email. It gives you time to consider what the job entails and quote accurately instead of guessing blindly over the phone.

Absolutely! It really helps to see the job first.

Thanks for the advice! This makes a lot of sense; I’ll definitely try this approach.
