How to Hire Skilled Help for a DIY Project?

I'm trying to figure out the best approach to hire skilled help for a project where I can work alongside the hired labor. I own some rental properties and need to replace a structure, like a walkway or deck. While I'm fairly handy, I want someone with better skills for the bigger job. My plan is to buy the materials myself and collaborate on the rebuild, but I've always found it tough to find someone who is open to this kind of working relationship. Has anyone had success with this type of arrangement? If so, how did you go about finding the right person?

While there are skilled laborers out there, be prepared to pay accordingly. If you want someone to actively participate while you're helping, their rates can vary. Expect around $100 per hour if they’re willing to have you alongside, and possibly even more if they're teaching you as you go.

Wow, that's quite the investment! Good to know what to expect.

Expert contractors usually work at a rapid pace and have their own professional practices, so it could be tough to get one to work with you directly. Many pros might prefer jobs where they can operate independently to ensure quicker and more profitable outcomes. If you do find someone, be ready to offer competitive pay as potential delays can cut into their profits significantly.

That makes sense. I guess if I pay them a decent rate, it might work out!

Finding someone willing to work alongside you can be a challenge. Many skilled laborers prefer to work independently rather than babysit a DIY enthusiast. You might want to consider hiring an assistant instead, as they could be more open to working with you on your project, allowing you to both learn and contribute.

I see your point! Having an assistant might be the way to go. I'll keep that in mind while looking.
