How to Identify a Water Leak Around My Window?

Hey everyone! I've noticed some water leaking in the bottom corner of my window, and while I want to repair the drywall, it also got me thinking about whether I should replace the entire window. We've had a company come out that used a moisture reader and found moisture in that same corner, and now I'm getting multiple quotes. One company says I don't need new windows; I just need to fix the bad glass. They believe that replacing the windows won't solve the water leak issue. This leaves me confused: should I go for a full window installation to address what might be damaged studs and find the source of the leak, or just fix the glass and hope to uncover the leak another way? The cost difference is significant, and I suspect the leak comes from outside when it rains, not from plumbing. What should I do to find the source, and who should I contact for help?

What kind of windows do you have? It helps to know if there have been changes to the exterior, like a new paint job. If you're dealing with double slider vinyl windows, consider whether any recent work, like wood siding replacement, could have affected the seals. You mention no visible signs of water damage from the ceiling, which is good. Just make sure your window isn’t smaller than it needs to be, which might lead to issues later on!

We have double slider, vinyl, dual paned windows. The house was recently purchased and we didn’t repaint it, but we did replace some siding and reseal the area around the front window. I also appreciate the advice on keeping an eye on the window size!

It sounds like you're dealing with a tricky issue! I recommend calling in a building scientist or a water mitigation expert. They can pinpoint where the leak is coming from by looking closely at the outside of your home. Sometimes these leaks are tricky and don’t just originate from the window itself. If the window's the problem, they'll let you know!
