How to Identify and Manage Load-Bearing Walls When House Hunting

Hey everyone, my husband and I are in the process of buying an older house, and we've noticed that many of them lack an open concept layout. We're trying to get a handle on load-bearing walls since they can really affect what renovations we can do.

Can most load-bearing walls actually be removed if we add proper support like strong pillars? Also, is there any way to determine if a wall can be taken out?

How much risk is there of compromising the house's integrity over time, even if we use the appropriate support? We definitely plan to consult a professional before making any decisions about removing walls. Thanks for your help!

Most load-bearing walls can be replaced with a beam, typically costing between $1000 to $1500 for engineering. The installation costs can vary quite a bit, especially if you’re already doing other renovations that require extra work.

You can remove almost any load-bearing wall if the right support is provided, like beams or pillars. However, it can be tricky to identify which walls are load-bearing—it's best not to guess. Always consult professionals before proceeding with any changes. If you're looking at big renovations, just keep in mind that costs can skyrocket, like in our case where we were considering around $75k to $100k for an open concept kitchen.

Yes, you can generally remove load-bearing walls as long as you install a proper beam or redistribute the load correctly. It's a good idea to get a structural engineer and architect involved to ensure everything is done right. Hiding the beam afterwards can also be a challenge, though.
