How to Improve Privacy in My New Garden?

Asked By GreenThumbLou On

Hey everyone! I'm new to gardening, so I hope my questions aren't too silly. I recently moved into a new place, and while the back garden is nice and landscaped, the sides are lacking privacy. I was thinking about putting some planters on the grass by the sides and planting a few climbing plants to grow up the fence before winter hits. Is that a good idea, or should I wait until next year? I'd love to spruce up the area and create some privacy over time, but I've noticed that the trees I like are quite pricey. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If you're considering climbers, some great options for winter interest and screening are Evergreen Star Jasmine or Winter Beauty Clematis. They can both offer a nice green look while also adding privacy. And remember, quite a few garden centers have clearance sales in late autumn, so keep an eye out for any deals on trees and shrubs too!

Absolutely, putting planters with climbing plants along the sides is a great idea! Not only will they help with privacy as they grow, but it's smart to do it now so they have time to settle in before winter. You might also want to consider adding a trellis for support as they grow taller. Just check that the soil is decent—if it's not, planters are a perfect solution!

Yeah, I think planters sound like the best option, especially if the soil isn't great. Plus, you can always add some colorful flowers later for a nice touch!

I noticed your pics, and it seems like the right side of your garden might be a bit shadier. If that’s the case, choose climbers that can thrive in partial sunlight. They might take time to grow tall enough for privacy, but it sounds like it’ll really enhance your garden!

Thanks for the tip! I’m hoping to find some good options that can handle that shade.
