How to Install a Larger Medicine Cabinet in My Bathroom?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of purchasing a place with an older bathroom, and I've got a bit of a problem. The current medicine cabinets are recessed and quite small, as you can see in the link below. I really want to install larger cabinets, but that would mean they would cover the existing tile. Is that possible? Do I need to patch up the wall where the recessed cabinets are, or can I just place new non-recessed cabinets over the tile? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

You can find deeper medicine cabinets, but keep in mind that your wall might not be deep enough for one. One solution is to build a wooden frame that allows the new cabinet to extend out from the wall, so it can sit over that partial tile without needing to remove it.

Okay, but would that frame be okay to just sit on the tile itself, or would I need to take some of it out?

Typically, recessed cabinets are installed between the wall studs, which are the vertical supports in your walls. Since your current cabinet is already double wide, you might be able to fit a taller recessed cabinet if you can find one that fits. Alternatively, if you want to replace the existing one, you can pull it out and install a larger cabinet directly on the wall. Just make sure to use a piece of plywood to cover the opening left behind and secure it to the studs before mounting your new cabinet.
