How to Integrate a Generator with a Solar Setup for My Off-Grid Cabin?

I recently bought some land that includes a completely off-grid cabin equipped with a Honda 6500 generator that runs on propane. The previous owners used a messy setup with an extension cord leading from the generator's 120v 30 amp outlet to a small load center inside the cabin. I plan to tidy this up by replacing the load center with a larger one to handle standard circuits for lighting and appliances.

However, I'd like to run some lights and small appliances without always firing up the generator, so I'm considering adding a small solar setup. I believe I can connect an inverter to both the generator and a battery bank, then hook up the inverter's 240v output to my panel. Does that sound right? If so, could anyone share resources or videos detailing a similar setup? Thanks in advance!

You're on the right track! Many inverters can connect directly to a generator. Check out this wiring diagram [link](https://eg4electronics.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/EG4-6000XP-System-Wiring-Diagrams.pdf), especially sections 1 and 1a for a good example. Additionally, you might want to consider options like the EG4 Chargeverter, which lets the generator charge the batteries while your inverter is running. This keeps a balanced load and can help with cleaner power from your generator. If you don't need a 6kW inverter, you can look for something smaller to suit your needs better.

Definitely go with the 6000XP! Just a heads up though, they're addictive—I've ended up with three of them myself! I'm currently running a 58kWh battery setup and even have more batteries on the way. But about your cabin, since it's only used during the weekends, four 6v golf cart batteries should provide enough energy for a small fridge and some lights. At around 2kWh storage, you should be good for a few hours of daily use.
