How to Make Kayak Paddles Using Only Hand Tools?

Hey everyone! I'm really keen on diving into woodworking but my situation makes it a bit tricky. I live in a small apartment in a place where access to affordable maker spaces is basically nonexistent, and my neighbors aren't fans of noise. I was thinking of starting my woodworking journey with hand tools, and I have a specific goal: crafting my own kayaking paddles. I've seen tons of plans out there but most rely on power tools, and many focus on Greenland paddles. I'm hoping to tap into your collective knowledge to get some advice and creative inspiration, especially if anyone has experience making whitewater paddles. I'd really appreciate any tips or resources you can share. Thanks so much in advance!

Given your apartment situation, you'll want to keep the dust down as much as possible—think heavier shavings. Do you have a specific type of wood in mind? Whether you're using construction lumber or something fresher, you might want tools like a drawknife, axe, and spokeshaves to get started. Also, consider building a shavehorse for stability while you work!

Check out resources from WoodenBoat. They have articles, videos, and even a series where they show how to make a canoe paddle using hand tools. Nick Schade also has some great kayak paddle designs you could adapt. It’s often about taking a paddle design you like and replicating it with the skills you build using those resources.

I’ve built a few Greenland paddles using just a No. 5 jack plane and a spokeshave. All you really need is a good workbench and a bit of patience. My first one was crafted using folding benches, so it’s totally doable!

You can definitely make paddles using just hand tools! Remember, even power tools started as hand tools at some point. For a solid start, check out Paul Sellers on YouTube—he’s got some great content. Personally, I love Rex Kreuger’s style; his book "Everyday Woodworking" covers the basics and includes projects to help you learn. Just dive in and get familiar with your hand tools!
