I'm working on creating a built-in mud room drop zone in my basement, but I'm facing a bit of a dilemma. My wife insists that it should extend past an existing wall outlet, which it will end up covering. Originally, I planned to use a solid plywood back. My main question is: should I cut out a hole to expose the outlet, incorporate the faceplate into the design, or is it a better idea to skip the plywood back altogether? I'd appreciate any advice or tips on how to handle this situation!

Sounds like you’re building something like a cabinet. The cleanest solution would be to think of the back of your cabinet as the new 'wall.' You could push the outlet out so it’s flush with the plywood back and then install the faceplate right there. An outlet box extender might be necessary too. If that’s not doable, you could make a precise cutout for the outlet, but it might not look as custom compared to having it flush with the back.

Thanks! That makes sense. The outlet will actually fall in the open cubby hole at the bottom section.
