How to Prevent Lopsided Loads in Your Washing Machine?

Asked By SunnyDaze88 On

I'm looking for a way to stop my laundry from getting lopsided in the washer, specifically during the spin cycle where it slams against the side. Is there a tool or insert out there that can help? I keep trying to search for the right words but can't seem to find what I need. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You actually don't need any special gadget for this! If you have a top-loading machine, start by adding the heavy items first, then layer in lighter ones. Don’t just toss them in—try placing them one at a time around the agitator. That way, the load should distribute more evenly during the spin cycle. It’s all about balancing things out as you go!

Thanks for the tip! This is something nobody ever mentioned to me before.

Totally agree! I work in a warehouse, and heavy stuff always goes on the bottom... why didn’t I make that connection sooner?

I usually check the balance by touching different spots inside the washer, like the 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions. If it feels off, I adjust by putting in jeans and towels horizontally to keep things even. It helps a lot!

Another reason might be that you're overloading the washer. I learned the hard way that cramming too many clothes in can cause all sorts of issues, including balance problems. Keep an eye on how much you're loading in there!

Yeah, sounds like my wife! She always loads it up to the brim, and I end up with a soggy mess.

Haha, I feel your pain! I tell my wife the same thing... then there’s no drying space left.

If the problem persists, you might want to consider checking the shock absorbers in your machine. They can sometimes get worn out and might need replacing. That's usually an easy DIY fix if you Google for your washer's model specifics.

I had a similar issue with my front loader and my comforter. I found that washing one alone was too much. Adding a second comforter or some towels helped balance everything out!

Great tip! Throwing in some towels definitely balances those heavy items.

Typically, I try to wash similar weights together—like towels and jeans. If I add a towel to lighter items, it throws everything off. Oh, and lowering the spin cycle speed can also help reduce those wobbling issues!

I actually use a foam roller to pad my washer against the wall. It also helps to fill my front loader all the way to avoid those violent shakes during the spin cycle.

If you’re using your own washing machine, don’t forget to check the loading instructions. For agitator machines, it’s all about placing heavier items strategically. For tub designs without agitators, look for instructions that suggest creating a balanced load in a specific pattern. Keeping it balanced makes a big difference!

Lately, my washer has been off balance a lot too. I suspect the tensioner belt might be loose. I’ve had better luck pushing down on the clothes as much as I can before starting it, seems to help with the balance!
