How to Properly Apply Wipe-On Poly: Timing and Techniques?

I'm currently working on making a workbench and trying out wiping on poly using a mix of 50/50 oil-based polyurethane and mineral spirits. However, I keep coming across conflicting information online about the process. What's the best timing for re-coating, and how long should I wait before sanding? Do I need to sand between every coat? I'm new to this, so I'd really appreciate any tips!

When applying wipe-on poly, a light hand sanding with high grit sandpaper is usually all you need between coats to help the next layer adhere better. I'd recommend waiting until the surface feels no longer tacky—essentially, if you touch it and don't leave fingerprints, you're good to go!

I've had good results with thinned poly as well. I prefer to wet sand and can usually apply another coat about 45 minutes after the previous one, going for around eight coats total for a nice finish. Just ensure that you're applying evenly, and trust your instincts on the timing!

Thinned poly can work wonders! I tend to add a bit of oil but it's not necessary. I like to wet sand directly as I apply coats. You don't always have to sand between each layer, and generally, if it feels dry, it's ready for more. I typically wait around two hours before adding another coat, but you may find that it varies based on your schedule. If it’s a workbench, don't stress too much about perfection; it's going to get some wear and tear!
