How to Properly Bottom Water My New Succulents?

I recently potted some new succulents and removed the rocks I had at the bottom of the pots about a month ago. The old soil was completely dry, so I replaced it with fresh soil that didn't have any rocks. I tried bottom watering them, but I'm not sure how effective it was since the topsoil never felt wet (I didn't keep track of how long I soaked them). I haven't watered them since getting them, and I've noticed one plant has some dried and dying leaves at the bottom. Did I water them too soon? How long should I let them sit in water? I'm using Miracle-Gro cactus mix for the soil.

Glad to hear you took the rocks out! Ideally, when you bottom water, the water should reach at least halfway up the pot's side. Let it soak for an hour, then check if the topsoil is wet. If it’s still dry, it may need more time. Succulents like their soil to dry out completely between watering, so watch for the leaves starting to wrinkle before giving them another drink. You might be watering too soon!

Exactly! If the roots aren't getting enough air flow due to dense soil, your succulents might suffer. Waiting for that dry cycle is key. Good luck with your plants!

I just separated some of my succulents and bottom watered them too, and they’re thriving! I fill up the trays with a bit of water and sprinkle some on the topsoil. They soak it up pretty well. Just make sure not to flood them!

Hey! I’ve heard that Miracle-Gro soil can be pretty dense and might need to be mixed with some perlite to help with drainage. If the soil is too dry, it can become hydrophobic, meaning it won’t absorb water properly, and this can cause stress for your plants. Adding some perlite or pumice can make a big difference! Just remember to keep an eye on how wet the soil is to avoid root rot—it's a common issue.

Yeah, definitely mixing in some grit should help! Succulents thrive in well-draining soil, and sometimes those pre-mixed soils don’t cut it. You might want to check out the soil and potting guide for some tips.
