How to Properly Hang a Clothing Rod So It Stays Up?

I installed a clothing rod a couple of months ago, and everything was fine until it fell down yesterday. I used a stud finder and a framing board to locate what I thought were multiple studs, but I'm not sure I hit them all, or maybe my screws aren't long enough. I'm looking for advice on how to securely hang this rod, which needs to support around 200 pounds of jackets.

It sounds like the weight might have caused the rod to fall. I recommend using bigger and longer screws, possibly lag screws, and make sure to install at least two screws high and low on each stud you find. Also, consider adding support struts for extra stability.

Before you hang it again, make sure you definitely locate the studs. You might want to poke small holes in the drywall to verify their positions—just make them where the new board will cover them later. If you have wood studs, use screws that are at least 2 inches long, with around 3.5-inch screws being ideal to reach deep into the studs. Use two screws wherever your board crosses a stud. If you discover metal studs, you'll need to adapt your approach because they require a lot more screws and the right type—make sure to use sheet metal screws instead of wood screws.
