How to Properly Install a 4-Prong Plug on My Dryer?
Asked by CraftyWizard42
Hey everyone! I'm in the process of switching my dryer from a 3-prong plug to a 4-prong plug, and I just want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. Specifically, should I connect the green wire directly to the ground screw outside the plate, separate from the other wires? Here's what I'm thinking: Red goes to the top nut, White to the middle nut, and Black to the bottom nut. Is that the right approach? Just want to make sure!

Yep, you're on the right track! Just connect that green wire to the ground screw. Remember, it's super important for any metal appliance to be grounded properly, so any unpainted area typically works well as a grounding point.

You're asking if the second white wire in the middle goes to ground, right? While it can be connected either to the neutral or directly to the appliance's ground, I'd suggest connecting it with the neutral for better conductivity since it'll have a shorter path. Just make sure you fully understand what you're doing first—safety is key with electrical work. It's wise to avoid touching anything unless you're sure of the process!

TechGuy22: Thanks for the clarification! I'm also working on an old Maytag dryer and really appreciate your insights. Just want to make sure I don't accidentally set anything on fire!
