I've got a fence with six cordon pear trees that I completely neglected to prune last year. I'm not really experienced with pruning, so I'd appreciate any advice on what I should do to get them back in shape. Also, my two sons love playing football in the garden, so I'm looking for some simple ways to protect the trees while they play.

You're a bit late for pruning, but no worries! I recommend you prune half of the branches now and save the other half for about three months later, steering clear of any fruit set during that time. I usually take everything off the trunk back to about four buds and prune the rest down to one bud. Just go for it! The trees will bounce back, but be ready to lose some fruit this June—unless they're tip-bearing, then next year could be tricky!
