How to Replace a Hard-Wired Microwave with a Plug-In Model?

I'm looking to swap out my hard-wired 220V microwave for a plug-in 120V model. My plan is to install a duplex receptacle in the existing four square box and connect one of the wires from the 220V circuit to it. I also intend to replace the old 220V circuit breaker with a single pole breaker that's suitable for the amperage. Is there anything I might be overlooking here?

You'll need a neutral for the 120V circuit. Some 240V setups have one, some don't. If you find you have a 220V circuit with four wires (black, white, red, and green), you can actually put the unused red wire aside and just use the black and white for the 120V, plus green for your neutral. Just make sure to cover the ends of the black wire with white tape to indicate it’s being used as a neutral.

Just a heads-up, moving the black wire to the neutral bar might not be up to code, so double-check that.

And don't forget to grab a blanking plate for the breaker box if you're not installing that second single-pole breaker!
