How to Replace Exterior Skirt Boards on My House?

Asked By CraftyNinja82 On

I'm looking to replace the skirt board (or whatever the right term is) on my house because it's in pretty bad shape, especially on the east side where it gets little sunlight. I've attached a photo for reference. I plan to wash the shingles with a TSP solution and trim some bushes that are blocking the sun. I'm somewhat handy, but I know cutting the 45-degree angles at the corners might be tricky, so I'll practice on some cheaper wood first. If I go with PVC for the replacement, what's the best way to fasten it? Should I use countersink screws and cover them with bungs? Any advice or tips would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Cutting those angles can definitely be a bit challenging, but it sounds like you’ve got a good plan with the practice wood! Just take your time measuring, and you’ll be fine. For fastening, using a combination of screws and adhesive is a solid approach too, especially for outdoor applications. Just remember to seal the ends of your new board to prevent moisture absorption!

Good point about sealing the ends! I’ll have to get the right sealant for that, thanks!

It sounds like you're taking the right steps! For the skirt board, definitely power wash the area first and address any damage, but if it’s really soft, replacing it seems like the only option. When you use PVC, countersink screws are a good idea, and using bungs to cover them will give a nice finish. Just be sure to pre-drill to avoid any cracks when you screw them in! Good luck!

Yeah, pre-drilling is key with PVC. Also, make sure you’re using screws that are suitable for outdoor use since they’ll be exposed to the elements.
