How to Run Wiring Through Ceiling Joists for Recessed Lights?

I'm installing recessed lights in my living room, which is on the first floor beneath a second floor with no attic access. I'm facing some challenges with running wire through the ceiling joists; the ceiling isn't strapped, and I've been advised against blindly drilling through multiple joists with a large bit (54/72"). The lights will be spaced about 5 feet apart, meaning I'll need to navigate 3-4 joists in between them. I want to avoid damaging the ceiling, which has a unique poinsettia texture that's hard to match. Would it be feasible to drill small holes (about 0.5") and use an endoscope to check the space before I drill larger holes? Are there any other methods or precautions you recommend?

You should be okay as long as the space above only has a bedroom, as there's usually not much in the way of utilities in the middle of the room. When drilling, aim for the center of the joist or at least an inch from the edge to keep it safe. Just make sure you know the direction the joists are running so you can plan your approach back to the switch.

There’s actually a bedroom, hallway, and laundry room above. I plan to check where the water and electrical lines run up in the basement beforehand since I'm pretty sure there are minimal cable runs.
