How to Safely Add a Floor in My Attic for Storage?

Hey everyone! I have an attic that the previous owners used purely for storage. They just laid down some 2x4 planks without fastening them, and then piled their stuff on top. I'm thinking about adding plywood for a more secure flooring solution and actually screwing it into the joists. Are there any concerns I should keep in mind when screwing into the joists?

Also, keep an eye out for electrical wiring up there while you're working!

No major worries about screwing into the joists themselves, but you should definitely check how your attic is framed. If you have engineered trusses, the bottom part might not be built to hold much weight. Just be cautious about how much stuff you put up there, or you might end up with issues.

Thanks for the heads-up! I actually have stick framing. Does that change anything?

Excellent advice! Especially pay attention if your attic is over a garage or like any longer spans. Better to be safe!

I started adding flooring to my attic, too! I’m working in 8'x8' sections and using 2x8s spaced 24" apart. I built it to ensure proper insulation, and I covered it with 1/2" OSB. The joists aren’t spanning more than 12', so I think I’m in good shape here.
