How to Safely Enlarge a Cutout in Granite for a New Cooktop?

I'm planning to swap out my old range for a new drop-in cooktop, but the existing granite cutout measures 35 x 19 inches with rounded corners, and I need to enlarge it to at least 19 3/4 inches deep. I'm unsure if the rounded corners will create problems, and I'll need to shave off at least 3/4 inch from the back. What's the best way to do this? Should I go for an angle grinder or a circular saw with a diamond blade? I know it'll create a lot of dust, so I'll prepare by taping off the area with drapes and using HEPA filters, but I want to ensure I choose the right tool for the job. Any advice?

For a cleaner cut with less mess, consider using a wet-cut technique with a diamond wire or circular saw. This will minimize dust clouds and give you better control over the cut. Just make sure you set everything up properly and keep the area wet while you're cutting to contain the dust.

Skip the grinders—they can make a huge mess. Instead, you should really look into using a diamond router bit. It’ll help you achieve a much cleaner edge. Plus, having a strong vacuum nearby can significantly reduce the dust. It might also be good to have someone else help out to hold the vacuum nozzle close to the bit as you work.
