How to Secure My Ikea Bookcase When I Hit Something Hard in the Wall?

Hey everyone! I could really use some advice. I'm trying to secure a couple of Ikea bookcases to the wall in my condo, but I ran into a major issue. I started drilling where I thought there was just drywall, following Ikea's instructions to use plastic plugs with screws and washers. However, after a bit of drilling, my bit hit something solid and I stopped immediately. If I try to use the plastic plug now, it will stick out of the wall, which isn't ideal. I used a stud finder beforehand and thought I was clear of the studs, but it seems like that might not have been the case. What are my options now? I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to this stuff, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you've either bumped into a solid brick or maybe even a steel plate meant to protect plumbing or wiring behind the wall. My recommendation would be to move your bracket over by about 6 inches to find a new spot to drill. Also, consider using toggle bolts; they're built to handle more weight and will give you a stronger hold on the bookcase.

Thanks for the quick reply! Just to clarify, I did use a stud finder and marked the spots where it beeped. The hole I drilled is right in between those. Do you think the stud finder might have been off?
