How to Secure Old Basement Support Posts Before Selling My House?

I'm currently getting my house ready for sale, but during the buyer's inspection, the inspector pointed out some 4x4 support posts in the basement, labeling them as 'unconventional supplemental support.' These posts have been in place since I moved in 9 years ago, and the house itself is quite old, built back in 1851. They aren't attached to the floor or joists, just wedged in. I'm wondering if I can just add brackets to secure them better, or if there's something more I should consider doing to satisfy the buyer's concerns.

It sounds like these posts aren't causing any real issues if they've been there for years with no problems. For a house as old as yours, calling them 'unconventional' is expected. Adding metal brackets to the posts might help calm buyer nerves, but it's probably more for peace of mind than anything. Just make sure they’re solid and won't topple over in case someone bumps into them. Honestly, most buyers of older homes should be more understanding about these quirks!

I'd say that reinforcing the posts with brackets is a good idea just to ensure safety, but remember that in an 1851 house, 'normal' looks a bit different! If the inspector seems overly concerned about this and other features that are typical for old homes, it might be worth a chat with the buyers to explain things more clearly to them. Posting some photos when you get a chance could also help them visualize what you're working with.
