How to Seed a Lawn Without Feeding the Birds?

I've got a question about seeding my lawn, and yes, I know it seems like everyone talks about this! I'm trying to figure out how to seed large areas without giving all the seeds to the birds. I love birds, don't get me wrong, but I'm already feeding them with wild seed and fat balls. And it seems like once they're done with that, they just munch on the 'Sprogs and Dogs' mix I scattered. I'm starting to think some birds are getting a bit too chubby!

I tried using a thin fleece-like fabric from Amazon, which worked wonders for my yarrow, but not so much for the grass. Any tips or tricks you all could share would be greatly appreciated!

One effective strategy is to put a thin layer of soil over the seeds after you've sown them. This way, birds will have a harder time spotting them, and it helps to protect your seed from being snatched up!

You might want to try using more seeds than you think you need. Accept that some will definitely be eaten, but making sure to cover them with soil can really boost your odds. A light top dressing of compost can also keep them out of sight until they germinate!

Great point! I’ve heard adding some straw or light netting can also help keep the birds at bay until everything’s coming up.
