How to Set Clear Boundaries with Neighbors Over Shared Garden Space?

I've lived in my detached house in the UK for nine years, and lately, I've been having issues with my neighbors behind me. They initially asked my husband if they could plant a spare plant on a strip of land that belongs to us, and since then, they've planted more and even removed some of the bark we laid down. I've clearly stated multiple times that the land is ours, but they've started treating it as 'their bit.' I've applied to move my garden wall to include this strip, but that was denied. I'm considering planting a boxwood hedge to create a clear boundary. But I'm torn—should I be direct with them again about this, or is it unreasonable to want a solid barrier without starting a confrontation or a legal battle?

I think the first step is to have a straightforward chat with them. It sounds like you’ve been too indirect. Just let them know you have plans for that area (like the hedge) and that they’d need to stop planting there. Open the conversation by saying you appreciate their enthusiasm but need to reclaim the space.

I had a similar experience! My neighbor started gardening at the bottom of my yard without permission. I politely told her I was making changes and needed her to stop. Keep it friendly, but be clear!
