How to Stain and Seal Cedar Tongue and Groove Ceiling Boards?

Hey everyone! I'm about to tackle a project where I'm installing a tongue and groove ceiling using cedar wood in my lanai. I've already put an oil-based stain on the visible sides of the boards, but I'm unsure about my next steps. I was thinking of just sealing all sides with spar urethane after staining the visible side, but now I'm wondering if I should also stain the underside of the boards before sealing them. Any advice on whether that's necessary? Also, I'd love any tips you might have on prepping the boards for this kind of project!

I’d recommend staining both sides if you can. It’ll help ensure even moisture exposure, which cuts down on the risk of cupping. While spar varnish is great for protection, oil finishes might be easier to maintain over time, especially in outdoor settings. Just keep in mind to layer on enough coats; your ceiling deserves some love!

Honestly, it seems like you might be overthinking the sealing part. If you're using spar urethane, it might be a good idea to seal both sides to avoid moisture issues, but I totally get if you want to keep it simple and only do the visible side. Keep in mind that with all that heat and humidity in Florida, proper sealing can help prevent warping. Good luck with your lanai!

That makes sense! With occasional moisture, sealing both sides could really help with stability.
